Visiting the Beloved
The difficulties of the Occultation begin with our being unable to visit our beloved Imam. We all regret not seeing him and deeply feel sorrow. Although during the short Occultation some of Shiites had the opportunity to visit Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) through his special representatives, now, during the Long Occultation, we fail to visit him through specific ways and persons.
However, as we see in many Hadiths, many scholars believe visiting him is something that has happened several times. The stories of great and honorable scholars as Bahr al oloom , Moqadas Ardebili , Seyed Ibn Tavoos and many others , are repeated for several times and mentioned in various books.
But about visiting Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h) we should notice these points:
The first point is that Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) usually visits his Shiites in emergency times or when they feel so much desperate and sometimes he visits them in normal situations. In other words some of his visits are for helping the lonely and desperate Shiites who are left alone in a difficult situation, so many lost passengers in different places as in the way to Mecca who were saved by Imam Mahdi and found their way out of desert. Most of visits are like this in which Imam or one of his real apostles helps the lost one. But in some other cases the visitor had the opportunity because of his special spirituality and the high place he had. So we cannot accept all those who claim about visiting Imam Mahdi the other point is that during the Long Occultation, especially nowadays, some self- seeking people claim that they visit Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) in order to make money and gain reputation. But instead, mislead others and destroy their faith. They prescribe some chants and prayers which are to tally baseless and heresy, and invite others, who are eager to visit Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.), to some meetings claiming that visiting Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) is something easy and available for everyone. But we should remember that God has hidden him according to his divine will and lets him to help those for who there is no other way except his direct help.
On the other hand visiting Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) is just possible if he sees that necessary. There fore , if someone is so keen on visiting his and tries to see him even for a moment, but he fails , he should not get disappointed or talking this as the sign of Imam not caring about his Shiites. And those who have this opportunity to visit Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) should not be considered as perfectly pious and virtuous ones.
The last word here is that although we all wish to see him daring our lifetime and it is a great honor to visit him even once in a life, we are not advised to make effort to visit him. Our Imam and especially Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) have repeatedly ordered us not to wander in deserts or following a reclusive lifestyle seeking him; instead, they all ordered Shiites to remember him all the time and pray for his “Deliverance” and try to act as he wishes and follow his goals and will in order to draw the time of his deliverance closer and all the world benefit from Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.).
Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) says:
“Pray for my Deliverance, for that is your relief.”
Here let us mention a nice story about Haaj Ali Baghdadi, who was an honorable man of his time, visiting Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.):
“He [Haaj Ali Baghdadi] was an honorable and pious man, who always went from “Baghdad” to “Kazemain” and to Imam Javad and Kazem (p.b.u.t) holy shrine. He says: “I had to pay some charity and religious tax [=Khoms]. So I decided to go to Najaf. There, I paid 20 Tomans to the great jurist sheikh Ansari (M.G.B.H) , and 20 Tomans to the great jurist sheikh Mohammad Hossin Kazemi (M.G.B.H.) and 20 Tomans to Ayatollah sheikh Mohammad Hassan shroghi (M.G.B.H). Then I decided to pay 20 Tomans to Ayatollah Aleyasin (M.G.B.H.) when I would return to Baghdad. I came back to Baghdad on Thursday. First of all, I went to Kazemain and visited the holy shrine of Imam Javad and Imam Kazem (p.b.u.t.). Then I went to Ayatollah Aleyasin (M.G.B.H.) and paid him one part of my debt and asked him to allow me to pay the rest of that money gradually in future or to someone who I knew as a poor person. He asked me to stay that night but I excused, for I had some important thing to do. Then I said good bye to him and left for Baghdad. I have passed one third of the way when I saw a dignified honorable man. He was wearing a green turban [the sign of Sadat] and had a beautiful black spot on his cheek and he was going to Kazemain. He approached me and said hello to me, then he embraced me and shook hands with me as an old friend. After that he asked me where I was going to. “I visited the holy shrines of Kazemain and now I am going back to Baghdad.” I answered. “Tonight is Thursday night; [it is better that you] come back to Kazemain and stay there.” He continued. “I cannot.” I insisted. “surely you can!” he said , “Now return to Kazemain and I will testify that you are a [true] follower of my father Ali (p.b.u.h.) and of my friends , and sheikh will testify as well; for God says: “…And call in two men from among your folk for bearing witness…” I remembered that some time ago I have asked Ayatollah Aleyasin to testify for me that I am a follower and friend of Ahl al Bayt and write that down on a piece of paper so that I could put it in my shroud. I asked him: “How did you know me and how can you testify that?” “How is it possible that one does not know those who pay all his right?” he responded. Surprised, I asked: “what right?” “That money you paid to my representative.” He said. “And who is your representative?” I continued. “Sheikh Mohammad Hassan.” He responded. “Is he really your representative?” I asked. “Yes” He said.
I got completely surprised and confused and I thought he should have been an old friend of mine who I have totally forgotten, because at first, he called my first name!
Then I thought that he expected me to give him some money, because he was of the holy prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s offspring. So I said: “I know you are of the holy prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s offspring and I owe you some money, which I should pay as Khoms, but I have asked for permission to use the money and pay that later.” He smiled and answered: “yes, I know. You paid some of our money to my representative in Najaf.” “Dose God accept this?” I asked. “Yes.” He responded. Then I thought how come this man called the greatest jurists of our time his representatives. But I forgot it again and did not think about it any more. Then I asked: “My lord! They say visiting Imam Hussein (p.b.u.h.)’s holy shrine on Thursday nights protects us from divine retribution. Is that true?” “Yes.” He answered and cried. Just some minutes later I found myself in Kazemain holy shrine, but we had not passed the streets to the shrine. We stood in front of the entrance and then he said: “say the prayer to these Imams who are buried here.” “I cannot say it well, my lord.” I continued. “Would you like me to say so you can follow?” He asked. “Yes, my lord” I answered He began and saluted the holy prophet and all Imams (p.b.u.t) and after Imam Hassan Askari (p.b.u.h.) paused and asked: “Do you know Imam of your time?” “Surely I know him!” I responded. “So salute him.” He said. “Peace be upon you, the proof of God and the lord of our age, [Imam] Hassan’s son!” I said. “And God’s peace and grace and mercy be upon you!” He answered with a smile. So we entered the shine and kissed the holy tomb. “Say the prayer for Imams” he said. “I cannot say it well, my lord.” I said. “Would you like me to say it for you?” he said. “Yes, my lord.” I continued and he said the prayer know as. “Amen Allah.” After that he asked me: “would you like to pray for Imam Hussein (p.b.u.h.)?” “Yes” I answered. “Tonight is Thursday night and it belongs to Imam Hussein (p.b.u.h.)”
So he said the famous prayer for Imam Hussein (p.b.u.h.). It was evening then and he said to me to join other people to say my prayers. After prayers I could not see him again nor could find him. I suddenly remembered that he called my first name and asked me to return to Kazemain, although I did not want to. He called the greatest jurists his representatives and suddenly disappeared. Just then I understood he was Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) but unfortunately I understood it so late.”
